Your hull should be made of a waterproof material, otherwise your ship will sink! It also has to fit inside a "rain gutter", so size is also important.

• No wider than 4.5 inches

• No longer than 8 inches (the length of a 16.7 oz plastic bottle)

• Should have a flat bottom that floats high in the water (the gutters are less than 3 inches deep, you do not want it to drag on the bottom)

• No sharp/jagged edges, as the gutters are made of inflatable materials.

Suggested Construction Materials:

• Juice box

• 16.7 oz soda bottle

• Popsicle sticks

• Pint or smaller milk/cream carton

• Pool noodle (cut down to about 6" then split in half)

• Flat piece of foam

Mast

The mast holds up your sail. Anything taller than 7 inches from the boat deck will likely capsize your boat, but that number could be smaller based on the size of your hull. Make sure it is attached well to the deck of the ship, and will not get damaged easily if wet.

Sail

The sail needs to be able to catch the wind the Scout creates, in order to push it down the gutter. Rectangular sails with a little slack in them tend to do better than triangular sails. The sails often get wet, so stay away from material that will fall apart easily (for example, newspaper is NOT recommended).

Sails cannot be more than 4.5 inches wide, or they will hit into the side of the gutter or another boat.

• ​Empty juice pouches (such as Capri Sun)

• Card stock

• An old folder

• Empty chip/snack bag 

• Cereal box

• Craft foam

• Index Card

Decorate Your Boat

Personalize your boat by decorating it! Color it, put stickers on it, give it a name! Just remember that the boat WILL GET WET so don't be surprised if the decorations get a little washed up.
