The Cub Scout 6 Essentials

When doing any outdoor activity with your Cub Scout, each Scout should have the following 6 essentials.

FIRST AID KIT

Cub Scouts only need a small kit to start.  Even a ziplock bag with a few adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointment (single use packages are convenient), and insect bite pain relief will be a great start.  As your scout grows the items in their kit may grow with them, adding things like moleskin for blister protection.

FLASHLIGHT

A flashlight or headlamp isn't just for night time.  As it gets close to dusk, it gets dark quick under the trees!  A headlamp is a great hands free option.

FILLED WATER BOTTLE

Everyone should have a water bottle that will hold enough water for your hike or outing.  Hydration is crucial, when it's hot, cold, or anywhere in between.  If you will be on a long hike, having an extra, or a hydration pack, is a great solution.

WHISTLE

A whistle is a great tool for if you get lost.  Two things to know about whistles:

1) Three blasts of the whistle means "HELP"

2) Whistles are ONLY to be used in emergencies

TRAIL FOOD

Trail mix, granola bars, protein balls, fruit....any healthy, energy boosting foods that do not need refrigeration make for great trail snacks.

SUN PROTECTION

Sun protection is important, even when it's cloudy!  Hat, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses...put them on!
