HELPING

Being helpful is part of the Scout Law, a value we seek to instill in everyone. The best way to help is not to wait until someone asks, but by providing assistance when you know someone needs it.

Any leader or volunteer in your pack can tell you how you can help the group. If you help by doing something you are good at you will find it rewarding.

VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering is another way you can get involved. Registering as an adult in your Pack lets others know that you are willing to go beyond just helping others but willing to take on some responsibilities. There are just two steps:

  1. Submit an BSA Adult Application to pack leaders.

  2. Complete Youth Protection Training online training.

LEADING

Being a leader means you are a registered volunteer that takes on a personal commitment to ensure that Scouting is being delivered in a safe manner, the way it was designed, and in a way that makes it meaningful to everyone involved.

Leaders in Scouting find it to be the most rewarding way to spend their time and share their talents.

BECOME A TRAINED LEADER

Every Scout deserves a trained leader. Adult leaders are eligible to wear the official Trained emblem when they have completed Youth Protection Training and their role-specific courses.

It's easy to become a Trained leader. All the required training can be taken online  — so you can take the courses at your own pace.

5 GREAT REASONS TO VOLUNTEER WITH PACK 204

Time is the one thing we never seem to have enough of, and you may think that volunteering is too big a commitment. But did you ever think about what you will get out of the experience?

1. You will spend more time with your child. Your child’s world is broadening at a rapid pace during the elementary years. The more time you spend with them as they gain this awareness, the stronger your relationship with them can be.

2. You will get to know your child’s friends. As your child gets older, their peer group plays a huge influence on them, their interests, choices, and outlook on life. As a leader, you can play an important role in guiding them and their friends towards becoming young men and women with strong values, an understanding of teamwork, and the desire to explore new opportunities.

3. You can combine resources with other parents. If you combine the resources, skills, and talents of the other parents in your child’s pack, you can provide a wider array of exciting learning opportunities and adventures than any one parent can provide.

4. You will make a difference in your community. The ripple effect of good will that comes from your contributions to Scouting is immeasurable.

5. Most importantly, it is a lot of fun! Of course we do this for the scouts, but the adults also have fun. Scouting is a game with a purpose. If you're having fun, the Scouts are having fun as well. That's when you know you are doing your job as a leader.
